Keeping the Law and Order

On Tuesday 14th March the Year 3 and 4 students had a visit from the local Police. We have been learning through Inquiry the difference between Rules and Laws. This was a great opportunity for the students to hear about how laws are maintained, and the incredible role that police officers are asked to do every single day. The children had an opportunity to ask the police many questions. They found the stories the officers shared really engaging and it was a great opportunity to make sense of our Inquiry unit.

Naplan Assessments

This week our Year 3 & 5 students took part in the National Naplan Literacy (Writing, Reading, Language Conventions)Assessments. They will be completing the Naplan Numeracy Assessments next Wednesday 22nd March.

NAPLAN tests the sorts of skills that are essential for every child to progress through school and life, such as reading, writing, spelling, grammar and numeracy. It is important to remember that NAPLAN is not about passing or failing, but about assessing learning progress.

he National Assessment Program – Literacy and Numeracy (NAPLAN) is the only nation-wide assessment of students’ literacy and numeracy skills. It provides parents important insights into their child’s progress at school, and helps governments, education authorities and schools to see whether young Australians are reaching important literacy and numeracy goals.

Sustainability at St Augustine’s

Clean Up Australia Day.

On Friday the 3rd March the Year 3 and 4 students participated in Clean Up Australia Day to make a difference in our local environment. Students took up the challenge of collecting any rubbish that was in the adjacent Taylors Creek Linear park as well as our school grounds. The enthusiasm even spilled over into lunch time with some students taking the initiative to volunteer to clean up around the oval in their lunch break. It was wonderful to see students collecting the rubbish and then using their mathematical skills to record and document the data. This data was submitted to Clean Up Australia and will be used as part of the national data collected on the day. A wonderful experience to see our students applying their recently learnt skills as well as making a difference in our local community.

Did you know? When purchasing snacks or chips for school lunches it is better for the environment and your food bill to purchase a large packet and put it into smaller containers for each day. This creates less rubbish for landfill and allows you to portion the amount your child needs rather than it ending up as landfill. “Just one less” item to avoid going into landfill.
