Cross Country trials at school: Friday 3rd May (wear sports uniform). The team will be selected from the trials. Please take note of the running distance required for each age section. If your child is selected they will participate in a training session at school and will then compete in the District competition at Brimbank Park.

TCL  –  Teachers as Co – Learners of ITALIAN

YEAR LEVEL 3 / 4  AT, S, M 2024

TCL involves multi-modal exposure and repetition of the Italian language outside of the weekly Italian lesson with Signora Di Lorenzo and brings the language inside the classroom setting with the classroom teacher.

A TCL approach is where all teachers and students are learners of the school’s target language (Italian) and there is frequent exposure to, and learning of, both of the target language and English. 

AIM OF THE TCL PROGRAM AT ST AUGUSTINE’S

Provides the students with the opportunity to:

• anchor their new language in depth 
• transfer knowledge to long-term memory through interweaving 
• recycle Italian across contexts with their teachers (Italian teacher and classroom teachers)
• demonstrate an increase in language acquisition and retention 
• demonstrate higher levels of student engagement and confidence, and success in producing the target language spontaneously
• lead and model the language to their classroom teacher and their peers outside the setting of the weekly Italian lesson

ROLE OF THE LANGUAGE TEACHER IN THE TCL PROGRAM                                 

 The Italian teacher models the language to the classroom teachers and provides updates on newly learned expressions introduced to the students during Italian lessons.                                                               

ROLE OF THE CLASSROOM TEACHERS IN THE TCL PROGRAM                    

Classroom teachers are encouraged to reinforce target language with their class and in their day to day teaching and interactions with the students and staff. It empowers the classroom teachers to become language learner allies together with their students and in turn increase the visibility of Italian language around the school, hearing it, seeing it and speaking it.

ROLE OF THE STUDENTS IN THE TCL PROGRAM

Italian Angels lead and model the Italian expressions to their classroom teacher and their peers.  Language leaders emerge via student voice, Italian language opportunities expand, and student agency strengthens.
