Learning Matters

Mathematics at St Augustine’s

This year we have begun implementing  the new Mathematics curriculum set out by the Victorian government. The majority of the Maths curriculum in version 2.0 is similar to content taught in the previous version however instead of three strands (Number & Algebra, Measurement & Geometry, Statistics & Probability) the curriculum is now separated into 6 strands

  • Number
  • Algebra
  • Measurement
  • Space
  • Statistics
  • Probability (commencing in year 3)

At St Augustine’s we teach using a  balanced approach to our Maths lessons. We believe that mental computation and automaticity in number facts is important while providing students with the opportunities to problem solve, make deep connections and understanding about mathematics, work cooperatively with others, to be flexible in their thinking  and  share and explain their strategies to solving the problem.

Australian Early Development Census (AEDC) – PREP CENSUS

Our  school will take part in the AEDC between May and July this year. The AEDC is a national census that is conducted every three years by the Australian Government, in partnership with state and territory governments. It measures how children have developed by the time they start their first year of full-time school.

The AEDC is voluntary and it does not measure how well children are doing at school, nor how their school compares to other schools. Instead, it shows how children are growing and progressing in five key areas, what is being done well and what can be improved.

AEDC data is used by schools, early childhood organisations, researchers and governments to help plan and improve services and supports for children and families. This is why it is important for all children in their first year of school to be included in the AEDC.

You can learn more about the ways AEDC data is used at https://www.aedc.gov.au/

Prep Community Helpers

In Inquiry, the Prep students have been learning about community helpers. We have been lucky enough to have had visits from two community helpers – FireFighters and Police. They shared lots of information about their important role in keeping people safe and what to do in an emergency. Next week, we will have the opportunity to see the inside of a firetruck!

Award Winners

Congratulations to the following Award recipients for going above and beyond to make a difference. This week we recognise and celebrate those students who have been inclusive and accepting of others.
